It started with a conversation around the dinner table—one of those unhurried, wine-poured, “what-if” kind of talks that slip between bites of pasta and laughter from the kids down the hall.

“We love this house,” my partner said, “but we’re starting to outgrow it.”

That sentence hung in the air longer than I expected. We didn’t want a different house—we just needed our home to evolve with us. And that’s how our journey to a room addition began.

We thought we were adding square footage. What we gained was so much more.

The Before: A House Full of Love, but Not Enough Space

We bought our home seven years ago, back when our mornings were quiet and our guest room doubled as an office. But life has a way of filling space—emotionally, physically, beautifully. Two kids. Two careers. One golden retriever. And suddenly, every corner of our home felt like it was multitasking. The dining table had become a homework station. The living room? A boardroom for Zoom calls. The hallway? A makeshift art gallery and shoe storage all in one.

We weren’t complaining. We were grateful. But we also knew something had to shift. We weren’t just trying to squeeze into our home anymore—we were trying to breathe in it.

The Room Addition That Changed How We Lived Forever

The Plan: Build for Beauty, Build for Balance

We didn’t want to just add a room. We wanted to create a space that felt like it had always belonged here. Inspired by the timeless, intentional philosophy of designers like Nate Berkus, we sat down and asked ourselves not just what we needed—but what we longed for.

  • A place where the kids could sprawl with books, not screens
  • A space with sunlight, warmth, and quiet
  • A room where no one would have to be anything—just be

We chose a 14×20 addition off the back of the house. Big enough to matter. Small enough to stay intimate. We added French doors that opened to the garden. A skylight. Built-in shelving for dog-eared novels and vintage finds from flea markets we visited on our honeymoon. We painted it soft white, with linen curtains that move like slow breath.

The Process: Yes, It’s a Mess Before It’s Magic

Anyone who’s ever lived through a renovation knows: it’s not always the dreamy, magazine-worthy montage. There’s dust in your cereal. There are delays. You argue about trim colors more than anyone should. There’s a point where you think, “Why didn’t we just move?”

But something shifts when the drywall goes up. When the flooring gets laid. When the structure that was once studs and permits starts to become a room. A sanctuary. A solution.

We worked with a local architect who listened—not just to our needs, but to the rhythm of the house. Our contractor, a second-generation craftsman, told us he built rooms like he was building for his own family. That mattered to us.

The After: A Room That Changed Everything

The room is done now. And while I could tell you about the recessed lighting or the reclaimed wood beams, what I really want to tell you is this:

It’s where we start our mornings now. Coffee in hand, dog at our feet, sunlight on the floor.

It’s where the kids read on rainy days, tucked under throw blankets in the window seat.

It’s where we hosted Thanksgiving this year, and somehow, everyone fit.

This room gave us something that’s hard to design but easy to feel—ease.

Our home feels bigger, yes. But more than that, it feels more like us.

The Takeaway: Not Just More Room—More Life

If you’re thinking about a room addition, don’t just think about square footage. Think about function. Think about beauty. Think about the kind of memories you want to hold space for.

Sometimes, the smartest renovation isn’t about what you add—it’s about what you make possible.

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. In fact, I wish we had done it sooner.
